Introduction

NanoNews ("we", "us", or "our") is a news aggregation app and website that collects news stories from verified third-party publishers and displays them to users. We are committed to protecting the privacy of the people who use our website and mobile apps. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, and the choices you have.

1. Scope

This Policy applies to personal information collected through:

  • The website: https://www.nanonews.io
  • The Android app (NanoNews) and the iOS app (NanoNews)
  • Any subdomains or related services (for example, app.nanonews.io)

It applies to visitors, registered users, subscribers, and contributors.

2. What information we collect

We only collect the information necessary to operate the app and give you a good experience. Categories of data we may collect include:

A. Information you provide directly

  • Account information (if you register): name, email address, password (hashed).
  • Profile info: display name, bio (optional).
  • Support communications: messages you send to support ([email protected]).
  • Newsletter / Beta signup: email address (if you subscribe).
  • Payment info: only if you subscribe via in-app purchases — payment is processed by Google/Apple (we do not store full payment card details).

B. Automatically collected information

  • Device & usage data: device type, OS version, app version, unique device identifiers (IDFA/GAID or equivalent), IP address, locale, language, timestamps, and crash logs.
  • Analytics: app usage metrics (pages viewed, features used, session lengths).
  • Cookies & similar technologies: on the website we use cookies/local storage for session management, preferences, and analytics.

C. Location (optional)

Approximate location inferred from IP address to surface local news. We do not collect precise GPS location unless you expressly enable location features (and we will request permission).

D. Content & source metadata

Article metadata: title, author, publisher, publication date, URL of original article (we display these to users for transparency). This is not personal data about the reader; it's attribution about the news item.

E. Third-party data

We may receive information about you from third-party services you connect (e.g., social login providers) or third-party analytics/advertising partners.

3. How we use your information

We use collected data for the following purposes:

  • To provide and operate the service (deliver news, personalize feed, allow account management).
  • To communicate with you (support, notifications about account or service changes).
  • To improve the service (analytics, debugging, feature development).
  • Security & fraud prevention (protecting against abuse).
  • Legal compliance (responding to lawful requests).
  • Marketing (optional): if you opt in to marketing emails, we may send newsletters and product updates.

If you subscribe to a paid plan (in-app purchase), we use data to manage the subscription and related billing notices. Payment processing is handled by Google Play and Apple; we only receive confirmation of purchase and necessary metadata.

4. Legal basis for processing (EU / EEA users)

If you are in the EU/EEA, our legal bases include:

  • Performance of a contract (providing the service you requested, e.g. account management).
  • Consent — for optional features such as marketing emails or certain cookies/analytics (you can withdraw consent).
  • Legitimate interests — improving services, analytics, and fraud prevention (we balance interests with your privacy rights).

5. Sharing and disclosure

We do not sell your personal information. We may share it in the following limited circumstances:

Service providers

We use trusted third-party service providers to operate the app and website: hosting providers, analytics providers (e.g., Google Analytics / Firebase Analytics), email services (e.g., Google Workspace or Zoho), and crash reporting. These providers only process data on our behalf and are contractually obligated to protect it.

Publishers & content partners

We display and retain links and metadata from original publishers for attribution. We do not claim authorship for third-party articles.

Legal obligations

We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or to protect rights, property, safety, or legal claims.

Business transfers

In the event of a business sale, merger, or reorganization, user data may be transferred as an asset — we will notify users where required.

6. Analytics, advertising & tracking

Analytics: We use analytics to understand app usage. On Android we complete Google Play's Data Safety form and disclose analytics data collected. On iOS we will complete Apple's App Privacy information.

Advertisements / monetization: If we show third-party ads, we will disclose this and list ad partners (and how they use identifiers). If you use a version with targeted advertising, we will obtain necessary consents (ATT on iOS).

Do Not Sell / Share: If you are a California resident and we ever "sell" or "share" personal information under CCPA/CPRA definitions, we will provide a "Do Not Sell/Share" option.

7. Cookies & similar technologies

The website uses cookies and local storage for:

  • Essential site functionality (session cookies)
  • Analytics (to measure site usage)
  • Preferences (language, display settings)

You may control cookies through your browser settings. Blocking certain cookies may affect site functionality.

8. Data retention

We retain personal data only as long as necessary to provide the service, meet legal obligations, and enforce agreements. Specific retention:

  • Account data: retained while account is active and for a reasonable period after deletion for backup and legal obligations.
  • Analytics & logs: retained in aggregated or pseudonymized form for up to 24 months (unless otherwise required).
  • Purchase records: retained as required by financial law and platform policies.

9. Your rights (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA and similar)

Depending on your jurisdiction you may have:

  • Access — request a copy of personal data we hold about you.
  • Rectification — correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Erasure (Right to be forgotten) — request deletion of your data (subject to exceptions).
  • Restriction/Objection — object to certain processing (e.g., profiling for marketing).
  • Data portability — request your data in a commonly used format.
  • Opt-out of sale/sharing — for California residents, an option to opt-out if applicable.

To exercise these rights, email: [email protected] with subject line: "Privacy Request" and describe the request. We will verify your identity and respond within applicable legal timelines (e.g., within 30 days where required). You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority (for EU users) or the California Attorney General (for CCPA concerns).

10. Children

Our service is not intended for children under 13 (or the minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have collected such data, contact us at [email protected] and we will promptly remove it.

11. Security

We use industry-standard technical and organizational measures to protect data (encryption in transit with HTTPS, access controls, hashing of passwords). No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure — absolute security cannot be guaranteed. We will notify affected users and authorities of data breaches when required by law.

12. Links to third-party sites

The app and website may link to third-party websites or embed third-party content. This policy does not apply to those sites; we encourage you to read their privacy policies.

13. International transfers

Data may be processed outside your country (e.g., hosting providers in other jurisdictions). Where transfers are governed by law (e.g., GDPR), we will use appropriate safeguards.

14. Updates to this Policy

We may update this Policy. We will post the revised Policy at https://www.nanonews.io/privacy-policy and update the "Effective date." Major changes will be communicated by email where possible or via an in-app notice.

15. How to contact us

For privacy questions, requests, or concerns:

16. App Store & Play Store specific notes

To stay compliant with both platforms, we:

  • Add this Privacy Policy URL in the Play Console and App Store Connect privacy policy field.
  • Complete Google Play's Data Safety form accurately listing the data types we collect and whether we share them.
  • Complete Apple's App Privacy Details and disclose all third-party data collection. If we collect data for tracking, we implement App Tracking Transparency (ATT) and request permission before tracking on iOS.
  • If we target / serve California residents, we add a Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information link if relevant, and have a Notice at Collection for CCPA.

Legal Disclaimer: This policy is drafted to be thorough and platform-friendly, but it is not legal advice. For binding legal compliance (especially regarding GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, or other local laws) we recommend a brief review with a data protection lawyer or legal advisor.
